Economic Development to Provide Scholarships for CREATEng Engineering Campers
Columbia, SC – The South Carolina
Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) Foundation is pleased to
announce that Dorchester County Economic Development will provide five full
scholarships to rising 8-9th grade students in Dorchester School
District to attend GSSM’s CREATEng
summer engineering program. CREATEng will be held June 19-22 at Fort Dorchester
High School.
A high-caliber
engineering and design-thinking day camp, CREATEng exposes students to
project-based, hands-on, team challenges, while introducing them to the field
of engineering and practicing engineers. Most team challenges are concentrated
in the areas of manufacturing and biomedical engineering. Student teams will
design blades and gears for a wind turbine, solder and build optical heart-rate
monitors, and print 3-D prototypes of manufacturing or surgical tools. In
addition to interacting with guest speakers, campers will take a field trip to
a nearby manufacturing facility to see real-world engineering in action.

will provide students with an unmatched STEM experience and expose them to a
potential career path. They will practice critical thinking and design
thinking, but they’ll also make new friends and have fun learning.”

the Governor School’s CREATEng Camp. Our industry partners are looking for the
type of skills that will be highlighted at the camp. It will be a great
experience for our high school students and give them some valuable insights
into manufacturing, biomedical, and engineering career fields,” said General

GSSM is also offering iTEAMS
Xtreme: Next Generation, an Arduino and robotics technology
camp, to rising 7th and 8th graders, June 26-29, at Gregg Middle School.
The application deadline for all of GSSM’s summer programs is June 1, 2017.
